Hysterectomy

A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus, and most likely, the cervix. Depending on the reason for the surgery, a hysterectomy may involve removing surrounding organs and tissues, such as the fallopian tubes and ovaries.Uterine Conditions: Hysterectomies are often performed to treat various uterine conditions, such as uterine fibroids (non-cancerous growths in the uterus), endometriosis (a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus), adenomyosis (when the tissue that normally lines the uterus grows into the muscular walls of the uterus), and abnormal uterine bleeding. Cancer: In cases of uterine, cervical, or ovarian cancer, a hysterectomy may be performed as part of the treatment plan to remove the cancerous tissue. Depending on the extent of the cancer and whether it has spread, other reproductive organs like the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and cervix might also be removed.
